What are US citizens doing to stop their country becoming even more ridiculous in the worlds' eyes?

It is reported in The Times that Don Mc Leroy, a creationist who believes the world is 10,000 years old, proposes to rewrite school textbooks to give a Fox news view of the world to Texan children. This is going to produce the most reactionary, insular, under educated children anywhere in the developed world, isn't it? 90% of all US schools currently use Texas textbooks. Scary or what?
